How Old Is Too Old? When to Replace Your Home's Water Systems

Learn when aging water heaters, softener, and RO system should be repaired or replaced to avoid leaks, inefficiency, and costly home damage.

"Out of sign, out of mind" is a phrase many homeowners live by - especially when it comes to water treatment systems. Most people don't think about their water heater, softener, or reverse osmosis system until it's too late. At best, the problem is caught early. At worst, the damage has already spread beyond the system itself and into other parts of the home.

The age of your water treatment equipment plays a major role in performance, efficiency, and safety. As systems get older, wear, and tear on internal components increases, which can lead to leaks, poor water quality, and higher utility bills. Spring is an ideal time to evaluate aging systems before they fail.

Douglas Water Conditioning & Plumbing Solutions has been Michigan's trusted water expert since 1968. With certified water specialist, master plumber on staff, and industry leading brands like EcoWater and Bradford White, we help homeowners stay ahead of costly water problems.

Why to Replace Your Water Heater

Over time, hard water minerals, daily use, and internal wear shorten the lifespan of water systems. Resin inside water softeners can become exhausted, heaters can develop scale buildup, and filtration systems can lose efficiency. older equipment is also more likely to leak, waste water, or drive up energy costs.

Not every aging system needs a full replacement. In some cases, components like softener resin can be replaced to restore performance. That said, upgrading outdated systems often prevents larger home damage and saves money in the long run by improving efficiency.

When to Replace Your Water Heater

Traditional tank water heaters typically last 9 - 12 years, while tankless systems can last up to 20 years with proper maintenance. As a unit nears the end of its lifespan, warning signs usually appear.

Common signs include inconsistent water temperature, rusty or discolored hot water popping or rumbling noises, and visible leaks. Even if your softener is working properly, these systems often point directly to the water heater.

Replacing an aging water heater improves efficiency, increases safety, and restores reliable hot water. Douglas Water Conditioning & Plumbing Solutions install professional grade Bradford White water heaters designed for long-term performance.

When to Replace Your Water Softener

With proper maintenance, most water softeners last 10 - 15 years. As they age, signs of failure may include scale buildup on fixtures, dry skin or dull hair, frequent regeneration cycles, and excessive salt usage.

Upgrading your softener can lower water and salt consumption while restoring consistent soft water. High-efficiency EcoWater system uses smart regeneration technology, meaning they only regenerate when needed - reducing wear and operating costs.

When to Replace Your Reverse Osmosis System

A reverse osmosis system typically last 10 - 15 years, depending on water quality and filter maintenance. Replacing filters on schedule helps extend the systems lifespan and performance.

Signs of aging include bad taste, low flow, leaking housing, or filters clogging faster than usual. We recommend changing pre- and post-filter annually and replacing the membrane every 3 - 5 years.

By testing water from both reverse osmosis faucet and regular tap, we can confirm whether your membrane is still achieving proper contaminant reduction - including PFAS and VOCs. Newer systems, like the EcoWater ERO835, offer faster flow rates and easier maintenance.

           How to Extend Systems Life

Annual maintenance is the best way to protect your investment. Douglas offers a $49.99 annual softener tune-up, which includes water testing, system inspection, injector cleaning, and time reset.

Additional ways to extend system life include flushing water heaters, replacing filters on schedule, watching for leaks or unusual noises, and using high-purity salt like Dura-Cube. Salt delivery services help ensure your system never runs dry and continues protecting your home.

          Conclusion

Aging water systems can quietly cost homeowners through wasted energy, higher bills, and increased risk of leaks. Taking a proactive approach with inspections and timely replacements helps prevent costly failures and home damage.

Simple maintenance tips can extend the life of your water treatment system, improve water quality, and prevent costly repairs. Learn how Douglas Water can help.

Just like your car, your water treatment system needs regular maintenance to perform at its best. A few simple habits can go a long way in keeping your water softener and other filtrations systems working properly. Routine maintenance helps save money, keeps your water clean and prevents costly breakdowns as equipment ages.

Douglas Water Conditioning & Plumbing Solutions has been a trusted source for water treatment since 1968. With nine Best of the Best water treatment awards across our four locations in the last five years, we’ve seen first hand how proper care extends the life of water systems. Below is a straightforward guide to help you keep your water treatment equipment running strong for years to come.

           Understand Your System

Knowing what equipment is installed in your home makes it easier to maintain it properly. Each system has slightly different care requirements

           Water Softeners

          - Remove hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium, giving you softer water throughout the home.

           Reverse Osmosis (RO) System

          - Reduce harmful contaminants such as lead, PFAS, and PFOAs for cleaner drinking water

           Iron Filters

          - Designed for homes with high iron levels to reduce staining, odors, and metallic taste.

           Whole Home Filter:

Pre-filter: Installed before the softener to remove sediment

Post- filter: Installed after the softener to improve taste and odor

           Routine Maintenance Tips

            Water Softeners

Check salt levels monthly and confirm that the unit is using salt properly.

Refill salt only when levels are low - refilling too early can lead to salt bridges or salt cakes.

Use high-quality salt such as Dura Cube Regular or Red-Out. Avoid low-grade salts with binders that can clog the system.

           Reverse Osmosis Systems

Replace pre- and post-filters once per year.

Replace the membrane every 5 - 7 years. Bringing in a sample from both your RO faucet and tap water can help determine membrane performance.

            Iron Filters

These systems are generally low maintenance, but periodic water testing helps confirm iron levels are being reduced properly.

            Whole-Home Filters

            Use the correct micron rating:

             Well water: 20 - 25 micron

             City water: 5 micron

Pre-filters should be changed about every 3 months (frequency may vary by water quality).

Post-filters should be replaced every 6 months.

If water pressure drops, checking the filter should be your first step.

           Annual Professional Tune-Ups

          Watch for Warning Signs

Reduced water pressure in one area or throughout the home

Hard water spots returning on glass or fixtures

           Cloudy, discolored, or unpleasant-tasting water

Use Quality Salt & Replacement Parts

What you put into your system matters. Cheap salts contain binders that act like glue inside your equipment, leading to poor performance or even warranty issues. Low-quality parts can cause more harm than good.

           Benefits of Regular Maintenance

Routine maintenance helps extend the lifespan of your water treatment systems, improves water quality, and keeps equipment operating efficiently. Efficient systems use less salt, reduce repair costs, and help prevent damage to plumbing and water using appliances throughout your home.

Catching small issues early can prevent larger problems later ultimately saving money and avoiding unnecessary replacements.

Top Plumbing Red Flags Homeowners Should Never Ignore

Ignoring plumbing warning signs can lead to costly damage. Learn the red flags homeowners should never ignore and how Douglas Water can help.

Small plumbing issues can turn into costly repairs if they're ignored. A strange noise, an unexpected smell, or a higher water bill may not seem urgent at first, but those are often early warning signs of bigger problems. Being proactive with your plumbing can save money, protect your home, and keep your expensive water systems running efficiently.

Douglas Water Conditioning & Plumbing Solutions has expanded our water treatment expertise by pairing it with licensed plumbing professionals to handle inspections, repairs, and long-term solutions. In this blog, we'll walk through the top plumbing red flags every homeowner should recognize before it's too late.

Red Flag #1: Water Stains or Mold Growth

Water stains on walls, ceilings, or floors (along with visible mold growth) often points to a hidden leak behind those surfaces. Over time, these leaks can cause structural damage such as wood rot and weaken framing. Beyond affecting your home's value, mold and moisture issues can impact the health of everyone living there.

By the time stains or mold appear, the leak has usually been present for weeks or even months. That's why it's important to act quickly. A professional leak detection inspection can locate the source and prevent further damage. Douglas Water Conditioning and Plumbing Solutions not only performs leak detection, but we can also help guide you toward he right professionals for cleanup and repairs after the issues is fixed.

Red Flag #2: Gurgling Sounds or Sewer Odors

Gurgling drains or sewer smells inside your home are serious warning signs. These issues often point to problems with your sewer line or plumbing venting system. Venting issues can allow sewer gases to enter the home, while sewer line problems can lead to backups.

Sewer gases are unsafe to breathe and backups require costly cleanup. These problems can escalate quickly often affecting multiple fixture at once. A camera inspection allows plumbers to identify blockages, collapses, or venting issues before they become major emergencies.

Reg Flag #3: Unexplained Increases in Water Bills

One of the easiest ways plumbing problems show up is through your water bill. A sudden spike in usage (or increased salt consumption) often signals a hidden leak. This could be underground, behind walls, or as simple as a running toilet or dripping faucet.

When leaks go unnoticed, the water keeps running, driving up the monthly cost, and causing long-term damage such as mold growth or foundation issues. The longer the leak goes undetected, the more expensive it becomes. Professional leak detection can stop the damage early, saving you money in the long run.

How Hard Water Affects Your Skin, Hair, & Laundry

Have you ever caught yourself thinking,

I wish my hair felt softer

         or

why don't my whites look as bright as they used to

? Maybe your skin never quite feels clean or your appliances and laundry seem to develop stubborn crust over time. If any of that sounds familiar, hard water may be the reason.

Hard water is water that contains minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron. While it's safe to drink, hard water can have a noticeable impact on our skin, hair, laundry, and water using appliances. Over time, those minerals can leave skin feeling dry, itchy and cause buildup throughout your home.

Douglas Water Conditioning & Plumbing Solutions has been a trusted source of water treatment since 1968. From sump pumps and water heaters to softeners and plumbing repairs, we don't just replace systems - we help maintain and repair them affordably. In this blog, we'll take a closer look to how hard water affects your daily routine and what you can do to reduce those everyday frustrations.

How Hard Water Affects Your Skin

There are several common skin issues that may be linked to hard water. If your skin often feels dry, tight, or itchy, hard water could be the culprit. People with eczema or psoriasis may notice more frequent flare-ups, and some experience a rough or filmy feeling on their skin immediately after showering.

So why does this happen? Hard water minerals react with soaps and body washes, creating soap scum. That residue can clog pores and prevent your skin from absorbing its natural moisture, leaving it feeling irritated and dry.

For long term relief, installing a water softener is the most effective solution. If you already have a softener and are still experiencing issues, a water treatment assessment can help determine if it's working properly. Short-term fixes include using gently, pH-balanced products and taking extra care to rinse thoroughly.

How Hard Water Affects Your Hair

No matter your hair length, texture, or color, hard water can take a toll. Common signs include dry, brittle strands, faded color, or even orange tone in lighter/color treated hair. Some people also experience dandruff or scalp irritation.

This happens because minerals in hard water build up on the scalp and clings to the hair shaft itself. Over time, that buildup weighs hair down, making it harder to manage and stripping away shine.

Short-term solutions include using a clarifying shampoo weekly and installing a showerhead with a built-in filter. For lasting results, having your water softener checked or installing one if you don't already have it - can make a noticeable difference in hair health.

How Hard Water Affects Your Laundry

There are a few clear signs that hard water is impacting your laundry. Soap scum on the inside of your washing machine and the need to use more detergent than usual are common red flags.

Hard water minerals reduce detergent effectiveness, leaving clothes looking dull, stiff or faded. Just like with skin and hair, minerals interfere with the detergent's ability to clean properly.

Short-term fixes can include detergent boosters or adding a small amount of vinegar to your wash. However, when appliances aren't running efficiently, the real cost adds up over time. Mineral buildup can shorten the lifespan of washing machines and other water using appliances, leading to repairs or premature replacement.

The Long-Term Benefits of Softened Water

Softened water offers lasting benefits throughout your home. Skin feels smoother, hair becomes softer and more manageable, and split ends are les noticeable. You'll likely use less shampoo and detergent, saving money month after month.

Laundry comes out cleaner, brighter, and softer, and appliances operate more efficiently. Over time, softened water can help extend the life of expensive water-using appliances potentially saving you thousands of dollars.

           Conclusion

Addressing hard water doesn't just improve home care - it improves everyday comfort. Softer skin, healthier hair, brighter laundry, and longer lasting appliances all start with better water.

              Low Water Pressure

One of the most common issues we see is low water pressure. While this can stem from various problems, there are simple steps you can take to identify and address the issue:

            Change the filters

Start by replacing your pre- or post filters on the whole house filter. Filters should typically be changed every 3 - 6 months, depending on water usage and quality.

For every two pre-filter changes, ensure you replace the post filter once.

How to change the pre or post filter

Turn the water of on either side of the filter housing.

Press the pressure release button on top of the filter housing.

Use the filter wrench provided at installation (or channel locks if wrench has been misplaced) to remove the sump housing.

Remove the old filter, clean out sediment, and check that the o-ring remains in place.

Insert the new filter, ensuring you remove any plastic wrapping, and reattached the housing by hand tightening the sump

              Resume normal water use.

Check the resin in the softener.

If changing the filter doesn't resolve the issue, the resin inside the softener might be causing low pressure.

To test this, bypass the softener and check if the water pressure improves.

Each softener has a brand specific bypass system. If you're unsure how to bypass your unit, contact us for your personalized assistance.

            Salt Bridging or Salt Cake

Salt issues are another common problem. These can manifest as:

              Salt Bridge:

A hard crust forms at the top of the brine tank due to moisture and heat

              Salt Cake:

Mushy salt accumulates at the bottom of the brine tank, often caused by adding new salt on top of old salt.

             How to address the issue:

Add hot (but not boiling) water to the brine tank to help dissolve the salt.

Break up the bridge or cake manually with a broomstick, taking care not to damage internal components.

              Remove any remaining undissolved salt.

              Prevention tip:

Let your brine tank get as empty as possible before refilling. Aim to refill when the salt is 6 inches from the bottom of the brine.

Use high purity evaporated salt instead of solar salt.

to prevent salt bridging, try filling the brine tank only half way.

Check the brine tank to ensure it has salt. Refill if needed.

Different smells can indicate specific water issues:

                Metallic or Penny Like Smell

Likely caused by high iron content.

                 Install an iron filter

to reduce iron levels and eliminate metallic odors.

               Rotten Egg Smell

Caused by sulfides in the water

                Temporary fix:

Clean the brine tank with a water and bleach mixture, then regenerate the softener.

                Long term solution:

Consider installing a carbon filter or chlorinate system to remove sulfides permanently.

Water treatment is essential for maintaining the lifespan of your home appliances and ensuring water quality. Softened water helps extend the life of dishwashers, coffee makers, washing machines, and water heaters. However, understanding the different types of water treatment systems can be overwhelming. In this blog, we'll break down the differences between a water softener, a reverse osmosis (RO system), and a whole house reverse osmosis system to help you determine the best solution for your home.

             What is a Water Softener?

A water softener is your first line of defense against hard water minerals. It reduces calcium and magnesium in the water, but does not remove contaminants like chlorine, bacteria, or heavy metals.

           How it works?

The salt in the brine tank does not soften your water - the magic happen inside the softener itself. Inside, the resin beads perform an ion exchange process. Hard water minerals (calcium and magnesium) attach to the resin beads that perform the ion exchange process. Over time, the resin become saturated with minerals and needs to be cleaned. This is where the alt brine comes into play - it rinses the minerals from the resin beads, allowing the softener to continue removing hardness from the water.

A Whole House RO system is a large scale reverse osmosis unit designed to purify all the water in your home, ensuring that every faucet, appliance, and fixture receives purified water.

Get to Know: Matt Long - Owner

All of the gentlemen that run Douglas Water Conditioning have a special place in my heart, each teaching me different lessons in their own way. But if I had to pick a favorite 'Douglas Dad', it would be Matt Long. He's the guest star on all my TikToks, the first to celebrate your wins, and has a way of offering guidance - even when you've made a mistake - without making you feel defeated. I've learned so much from this company, but more importantly, I've learned what a great place it is to work. There's a unique family and friends dynamic at Douglas Water Conditioning, and no one embodies that better than Matt Long

Matt started working at Douglas Water Conditioning when he was 21 years old. A young dad on the job hunt, he came across a help-wanted ad in the local paper:

Salt delivery driver needed at Douglas Water Conditioning.

Matt and his friend both applied. "Funny thing was, my friend got hired right away. I wasn't hired immediately - they needed a few more days to think about it."

As a young employee, one of the biggest challenges Matt faced was being reserved. "I was quiet." he admits. But that didn't stop him from pushing forward.

Matt worked his way up - from salt delivery to service, then to service manager. "I had a lot of fun doing deliveries. It was a good time," he recalls. But once he got into installs and service, he realized how much there was to learn. "I gravitated toward problem-solving."

Transitioning into management wasn't easy. "I never had management experience before. It took a long time to understand what it meant to be a manager," Matt says. But through experience, he learned a crucial lesson that would prepare him for ownership:

Always get all the information before making a decision.

"Whether it's a good decision or a hard one, try to see it from both sides - as the company and as the employee"

Over the years, Matt collected stories and memories that reinforced the family - oriented culture of Douglas Water Conditioning. That sense of connection is something he values deeply. "It's the family and friend type feel." he says. His biggest advice to employees?

            Never stop growing.

Like many of the owners, Matt enjoys the great outdoors. His favorite pastime? Camping. His go to spot is Walden Woods. "I love the relaxation and the disconnect from electronics. Walden Woods is close to home, but feels very far away at times.

Matt's kids have shown interest in what he does at Douglas. "I think that's why my daughter got into the medical field. Her mom is in medicine, and she enjoys helping people. I just help people in a different way - taking care of your water is very important"

When Matt looks back on his career, he's most proud of watching employees grow from knowing nothing - just like he once did - to becoming successful salespeople and front office staff.

Beyond water treatment, one of the biggest lessons he's learned is how to read people and be more personable. "I feel like everyone knows that I'm here not only for my gain, but for everyone else's. That comes with its good and bad. When I started here, Mike's dad Doug and Jason's dad Jerry, made me feel like I was part of the family. I always wanted to do better, even now. My love for this company and what I do goes back to those first years when I had no experience whatsoever."

Your water softener plays a vital role in protecting your home's plumbing and improving water quality. It's made up of two key components: the softener unit itself (where the ion exchange occurs) and the brine tank (which holds the salt that regenerates the system). Over time, both parts need attention to function properly.

Why Regular Water Softener Inspections Matter

Extends the lifespan of your softener

              - Routine check -ups catch small issues before they become expensive repairs, helping your unit run efferently for years.

             Maintains high water quality

              - Hard water can cause visible buildup on fixtures, affect your skin and hair, and reduce the effectiveness of clean products. Regular inspections ensure your system continues to remove hard water minerals effectively.

             Prevents costly damage

             - Leaks or system failures can lead to flooding or appliance damage. Regular inspections help prevent these risks.

             Improves performance and energy efficiency

              - Water - using appliances last longer and perform better when supplied with soft water. A well-maintained softener saves energy and cuts back on cleaning and repair costs.

What to Look for During an Inspection

Salt Level in the Brine Tank:

Keep the salt level about 6 inches above the bottom before refilling

Letting the tank nearly empty before refilling helps prevent salt bridging and clumping

             Salt Type & Quality:

Use evaporated, pressed salt for best performance (like Dura - Cube)

Avoid rock salt or products with binders, which can reduce efficiency and clog your system

              Brine Tank Condition

Look for standing water, mushy salt, or debris at the bottom.

The tank should be clean, and the float assembly should move freely.

               Resin Beads & Tank

If your water feels hard even with salt in the tank, we might need to investigate the resin beads. A quick in-store water test can help determine if your system is working effectively.

Get to Know: Mike Lanni

Get to know Mike Lanni, owner of Douglas Water Conditioning, as he blends family values with modern leadership to deliver exceptional customer care.

When I (Jasmine Ayala) interviewed at Douglas Water Conditioning, I interviewed with Mike Lanni. I immediately appreciated his communication style - quick, straightforward, and honest. He answered all my questions clearly, always moving with focus and purpose. Mike is a perfectionist in the best and most respectful way possible. Efficient is another word that comes to mind when I think of him. His dedication to customer care ensures that even as Douglas Water Conditioning continues its growth, it remains a family business at heart.

Mike Lanni remembers the early days of Douglas Water Conditioning better than most. After all, his father, Douglas Lanni, founded the business. Mike recalls riding shotgun to service calls and running around the back of the shop as a kid. "I just remember him running around quite a bit" he says. "I would be playing with customers' kids while he worked." Doug's early customers included fellow police officers, and he was a constant presence in the community, repairing water softeners, and building relationships.

At 21, Mike decided to transition out of landscaping, take business classes, and start climbing the cooperate ladder. He wanted more consistency and the opportunity to build a name for himself. Over the next ten years, he worked his way up, gaining experience in multiple roles.

Eventually, he and his wife realized they wanted to start a family, and the work life balance in corporate wasn't sustainable. "Financially, we were fine, but the work-life balance was horrible," he recalls. "I just decided I wanted to move back home."

By chance, Scott heard Mike was moving back and reached out to discuss the possibility of him joining the team. Mike met with Scott, Jason and Ron to discuss the company's goal and how he could help achieve them. They created a role for him - quality control - where he focused on refining processes and modernizing the business.

Mike always admired how hands on his father was. Douglas wasn't just a business owner - he served on the Commerce Township board, the planning committee, was a volunteer firefighter and a reserve with the Oakland County Sheriff. "It was always something I looked up to and something to possibly achieve," mike says. "I always know i can achieve anything because he was doing way more than what I'm doing today."

One of the biggest lessons Mike has learned as owner is patience. Transitioning from corporate hustle to a family business required a shift in mindset. "Corporate was all about making money and going non-stop," he explains. "Here, we take pride in listening to employees and getting to know their families. We truly are a small family."

Customer care is Mike's ultimate priority. He believes in doing the right thing, educating customers, and ensuring they receive the best possible water treatment. He takes customer concerns personally. "If we get a bad review, those are things that hurt my stomach," he says. "I call those customers personally. Whether it's our fault or not, at the end of the day, we want to make sure they have good quality drink water systems." His philosophy is that no matter the situation, Douglas Water Conditioning must exhaust every avenue to find a solution.

Like Scott and Matt, Mike enjoys outdoor activities. He's always on the move - hunting in the fall, riding snowmobiles in the winter, dirt biking in the summer, and spending Sundays with his family. "I have a three-year old who always wants to be outside and she is my whole life," he says.

His hobbies, especially hunting, provide a much needed reset. "When I'm hunting, I could be sitting for 8 - 12 hours, seeing nothing, but birds and squirrels," he says. "It gives me time to think." With the demands of the water industry, calls can come at any time of the day. "I enjoy what I do, and I love this industry, but there has to be time set aside for family and decompression."

Mike takes pride in his versatility within the company. He's done everything from working the front counter to running service calls. However, his goal is to focus more on teaching. Looking ahead, Douglas Water Conditioning is expanding. The company recently added plumbing services and aims to continue growing in Michigan, from Oxford to the Thumb region. "We want to grow at a steady pace while keeping the family atmosphere intact," Mike says.

When it comes to honoring his father's legacy, Mike emphasizes slowing down and prioritizing customer care. "As a business owner, you have to take a step back and understand that the customer is the most important thing," he says "We need to be educated enough to take care of them, speak to them properly, and follow through on our commitments. Everything else will follow after that."

Mike Lanni Brings a modern perspective to Douglas Water Conditioning while maintaining the company's core value of integrity, education, and exceptional customer service. With his leadership, the future looks bright for water treatment.

            Introduction

We hear it all the time: "Just buy it on Amazon" or "it's cheaper online." While Amazon is great for certain things - like quirky t-shirts or your favorite snacks -

water treatment is not one of them.

Water quality impacts your health, your plumbing, your appliances and your home's long-term value. While Amazon might offer fast shipping and seemingly good prices, it often comes at the cost of

product quality, proper installation, and long-term support.

When it comes to something as important as your water, cutting corners can lead to serious consequences.

            Quality & Authenticity Concerns

Many water treatment products sold on Amazon come from

            third-party seller

             - small vendors with no formal affiliation with Amazon. These sellers manage their own inventory, customer service, and fulfillment, which opens the door to a number of risks:

              Counterfeit and repackaged items:

filters, membranes, and parts may look like name-brand products, but are often made with inferior materials. These substandard items can damage your system, reduce filtration effectiveness, and void your warranties.

             No NSF/ANSI certifications:

Amazon doesn't always verify whether a product meets the industry standards that ensure water safety and performance

Example: A few years ago, counterfeit EcoWater Reverse Osmosis membranes were being sold on a 3rd party website. Some customers unknowingly installed them, which lead to cracked manifolds and denied warranty claims - because the damage was caused by an unapproved part.

Amazon has programs like Brand Registry and its A - Z Guarantee, but they aren't perfect, and many customers only discover the issues after costly damage has already occurred.

            Misinformation and Misleading Reviews

Amazon reviews can be helpful - but they can also be

            inaccurate, manipulated, or misleading.

Many reviews are paid for, auto - generated, or posted by users with no actual experience with the product.

Product descriptions also tend to be

             overpromised,

using phrases like "removes all contaminants." In the water treatment world, we don't deal in absolutes - we deal in

               reduction.

We can reduce iron, arsenic, and other harmful contaminants significantly, but very few filters can remove "everything".

            Even more concerning,

Amazon sellers can't give you technical advice.

There's no expert consultation to help you decide what system your home actually needs. That's a big risk for something as specific as water chemistry

            .

            Compatibility and Installation Risk

No two homes have the exact same water chemistry - not even on the same street. That's why

"one - size - fits - all" water treatment systems often don't work.

what works in one home may be ineffective or even damaging in another.

When you buy a water softener or reverse osmosis system online and install it yourself:

             Improperly installed systems can

              impact your home's resale value

            o Water Testing or Customization

Before selecting a water treatment system, your water should be tested. Why? Because the solution depends on the problem. Is your concern iron? Arsenic? Hardness? Chlorine? PFAS or PFOAS?

Amazon can't test your water. And it certainly can't interpret your results.

Amazon sellers rarely offer reliable support, maintenance plans, or extended warranties. When your system stops working or needs repair, there's no local technician, no replacement parts, and no one to call. That's not just frustrating - it's expensive.

            Introduction

There's a long list of things that can end up in your water - and many of them shouldn't be there. Among the most concerning are contaminants known as

           VOCs, PFOAs, and PFOS.

While these chemicals have been around for decades, it's only in recent years that they've gained the attention they deserve due to their potential health risks.

          These pollutants are not only

           common in everyday products,

but they also tend to be

           persistent in the environment.

That means once they enter your water supply, they're hard to remove - and potentially harmful if left un treated

            What are VOCs?

           Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

           are chemicals that can

           vaporize into air

          and

           dissolve in water.

Once released into groundwater, many VOCs persist for long periods and can easily migrate into drink water wells.

The Michigan Plumbing Code (MCP) is extensive, making it crucial to hire a professional who understand and follows it. Code enforcers hold plumbers accountable for adhering to these regulations, which cover key areas such as:

Plumbing code regulations apply to any part of the home that expels waste or uses water. Updates occur approximately every three years to align with evolving standards, especially as fixtures and appliances become more energy-efficient.

One of a plumber's most critical responsibilities is ensuring safe drinking water. Municipalities frequently change their water sanitization practices, and in older homes or manufactured homes, the chemicals used for water treatment can react unfavorable with certain plumbing materials.

A plumber with limited qualifications may not fully understand how different materials interact. Some metals, for example, should be avoided due to their potential to corrode, react with water, or leach harmful substances in the supply:

can weaken over time, especially when exposed to hot water, leading to corrosion and contamination.

Improperly installed plumbing such as water heater that does not meet code, can decrease your home's resale value. Additionally, an incorrectly installed unit may pose serious risks, such as:

guys - Scott Shepherd, one of the four owners of Douglas Water Conditioning.

Scott's journey with Douglas Water Conditioning began in November 1989, when he was just 16 years old. His father, a fireman, encouraged him to stop by and visit Doug Lanni, a fellow fire fighter who owned a small, but growing water treatment business. Scott started in the shop, but was quickly moved to lead the salt delivery department - all on his own. Back then, there were no GPS device and maps often didn't reflect the rapidly expanding neighborhoods. Scott's experience as a hunter helped him navigate unmarked roads and unlabeled houses, using landmarks and cardinal directions to get the job done.

After proving his dedication, Scott continued working for Douglas Water Conditioning throughout high school as part of a co-op program. He would arrive at the Cooley Lake location at 1pm, load up the flatbed truck with softeners and tools, and head out for deliveries or installations. By the time he graduated , he had already gained hands-on experience in installs and service work. He decided to stay with the company because he enjoyed the freedom of going to different jobs, meeting people, and solving plumbing issues. "It was a rewarding job" Scott recalls.

Over the years, he has witness tremendous growth - not just in the company, but in the industry itself. When he first started, Douglas Water had only three employees. Today, the company has over 50 employees and provides full service water treatment, including softeners, reverse osmosis systems and bottled water. Scott has seen firsthand how people's understanding of water quality has evolved; in the early 90s, Douglas Water installed only about one reverse osmosis system per month, whereas now, they install 50 to 60 every month.

Scott's career is filled with notable achievements, including winning a national sales competition at just 26 years old, earning him a brand-new Ford Mustang GT Convertible. For three years, he was the top salesperson in the U.S., consistently selling ten systems per day. But outside of work, Scott is passionate about the outdoors. He enjoys hunting, valuing the camaraderie, survival skills, and grit it teaches him. His favorite hunting experiences include tracking deer and hogs in Texas at night using thermal vision. Hunting, he says, has given him "ambition and grit - the ability to put your nose down and get things one."

Have you ever wondered why you need to put salt in your brine tank?

Does salt actually make the water soft? Does the brand or type of salt you use matter? In this blog post,

we'll explore the role of salt in water softeners

, review different types of salt, and discuss how to choose the best option for your system.

The Role of Salt in Water Softeners

Contrary to popular belief, salt isn't what directly softens your water. The magic happens through a process called

           ion exchange

, where resin beads inside your softener remove hard water causing minerals like calcium and magnesium. Over time, these minerals accumulate on the resin beads, requiring 'cleaning' to maintain efficiency and performance.

This is where salt plays a vital role. When dissolved in water, salt creates a brine solution that 'cleans' the resin beads by flushing away the accumulated minerals, allowing them to continue softening your water. Choosing the right salt not only improves the performance, but also extends the life of your water softener.

Different Type of Water Softener Salt

             Solar Salt

            How it's made:

Solar salt is produced by evaporating seawater or brine, typically collected through solution mining, and then harvested from outdoor pools

              Pros:

Purity of about 99.5% making it suitable for water softeners

Cost - effective and widely available

             Cons:

The outdoor harvesting process may introduce insoluble materials like rocks, which can accumulate in the brine tank, causing performance issues and requiring more frequent cleaning

               Evaporate Salt

             How it's made:

Like solar salt, evaporated salt starts with solution mining. However, the evaporation process occurs in a controlled, indoor environment where heat and steam remove excess water. This results in a high purity level of about 99.9%

             Pros:

High purity reduces brine tank buildup

             What it is:

An alternative to sodium-based salts, potassium chloride replaces hard water minerals with potassium during the regeneration cycle.

             Pros:

              Lower purity (around 99.1%)

              More expensive than traditional salts

Maintenance Tips for Salt in Water Softeners

               Monitor Salt Levels:

Only refill your water softener when the salt level in the brine tank is

six inches or less from the bottom.

Overfilling can lead to salt bridging and inefficiencies.

                Regular Checks:

Check your brine tank periodically to ensure it has enough salt to maintain soft water. The frequency of checks depends on factors such as water hardness, household size, and water usage.

                Avoid Salt Bridges:

Excessive bridging (a hard crust that forms above the water level) can interfere with the softener's regeneration process. If you notice a salt bridge, pour hot water into the brine tank to dissolve it and scoop out any remaining salt or debris.

Hard water contains a high concentration of natural minerals

, primarily calcium and magnesium, which are picked up as water travels through rocks and sediment. While these minerals are not directly harmful, hard water often includes other substances like VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and PFASs (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), that may pose health risks. These contaminants enter water sources, such as private wells, community wells, or municipal systems. We'll dive deeper into VOCs, PFAS, and similar compounds in future blog posts.

              The Downside to Hard Water

Hard water isn't just tough on your appliances it can take a toll on your skin, hair, and plumbing too.

Although calcium and magnesium aren't harmful to consume, they leave behind visible mineral deposits that can clog faucets, showerheads, dishwashers, water heaters, and washing machines.

This build up reduces efficiency, increases energy consumption, and shortens the lifespan of your appliances.

           Signs of hard water include:

White, chalky buildup on fixtures and dishes

Stiff laundry or fabrics that wear out quickly

Soap that doesn't lather well or leaves residue

Water softeners are specifically designed to combat the problem caused by hard water using a process called ion exchange.

A common myth: Many people believe water softeners add salt to their drinking water, creating a salty taste. In reality, the salt in the brine tank is used to recharge the softener's resin, not to soften the water itself. The amount of sodium introduced into softened water is negligible less than what is found in a single slice of bread.

Behind the Scenes: Ion Exchange Process

Inside a water softener, resin beads charged with sodium ions remove calcium and magnesium from hard water. Here's how it works:

As hard water flows through the resin tank, the calcium and magnesium ions attach to the resin beads, displacing the sodium ions

This exchange reduces the hard water minerals, leaving the water 'softened'.

              Regeneration

Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium. To restore the softener's functionality, the system undergoes a regeneration cycle:

Salt from the brine tank creates a saltwater solution

This solution flushes through the resin tank, replacing calcium and magnesium ion with fresh sodium ions

The displaced minerals are flushed out as waste water

Regeneration typically happens at night, often around 2am, ensuring no hard water enters your home during this process.
